Collins & Katz Family YMCA nearing completion at Uni

[Posted Feb. 17, 2017] The exterior scaffolds have been removed and the interior work on the massive Collins & Katz Family YMCA is continuing with opening expected in April. The work has been held back slightly because of the heavy rains in the area, but the pouring of the pools is continuing and the installation of the elegant copper roof is proceeding. Uni establishes Violetta Ponce Scholarship Fund

[Posted Feb. 9, 2017] The untimely passing of another member of the Uni family has resulted in the creation of a new scholarship at Uni: the Violeta Ponce Scholarship. Created in 1985 to counter the effects on Uni of budget cuts across the L.A. Unified School District, more than $1 million has been raised to assist faculty and students. Uni’s “School Report Card” now posted online

[Posted Jan. 12, 2017] The Los Angeles Unified School District has posted Uni’s 2015-16 School Report Card with data on Uni’s demographics, environment and performance. Some highlights: Attendance: 1,671 students across grades 9-12 Demographics: 55% Latino, 24% African-American, 10% White, 9% Asian-Filipino; 2% did not declare Graduate in 4 years: 89% (vs. LAUSD average of 75%) Students enrolled in an Advanced Placement class: 25% (vs. LAUSD average of 25%) The breakdown of student backgrounds included the following statistics: 71% Socioeconomically disadvantaged 19% Gifted and talented 12% Students with Disabilities There […]

Uni alum Steve Smith Sr. retires from football

[Posted Jan. 8, 2017] “Dear Commissioner Goodell: “This is to notify you that as of today, I, Steve Smith Sr., will no longer be antagonizing defensive backs. I am retiring from the National Football League.” With that letter, sent January 2, the greatest football player ever to attend University High School ended what could be a Hall of Fame career as an NFL star.
