Uni graduation was a magnet for stars in the studio-system days

By: | Tags: , | Comments: 0

[Posted March 25, 2018] No end to the comments about celebrities who went to Uni, especially during the heyday of the Hollywood studio system, when Uni was often the preferred high school for graduation of studio-taught, contract-player teenagers. Louise (Kosches) Iscoe ‘46 sent a note to us and remembered: “After so many years (1946), I have fun looking back on Uni and reading your newsletter. When I read about the stars who attended graduation, I thought about my graduation. One day, at a rehearsal, the door opened and six young […]

More on that famous ‘58 Grad Night Party!

By: | Tags: | Comments: 1

[Posted March 10, 2018] Someone has got to do a book or documentary on the Class of ‘58 graduation and grad night party … you know, that one with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis, Jr.? Ted Tanaka wrote in with more on the amazing celebration of a class which included Frank’s daughter, Nancy Sinatra: “I was there, invited by S’58 Elsie Tominaga. I was a Uni Imperials of W’57, only about 165 in the class. (https://santacruzcore.com/) Pali Hi site grounds were just starting to be leveled before opening in ’61. “I clearly […]

Meet the Cast: “Grease” Opens on April 18

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0

[Posted February 25, 2018] The cast of Uni’s upcoming production of Grease is set and the show is being widely anticipated on campus. No wonder: it’s one of the most popular musicals in production across the country. Although originally written in Chicago in 1971, with specific ethnic references to that city, it is best known from Paramount’s 1978 film that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson (Sandy Dumbrowski in the musical) in their senior years at fictional Rydell High School. The Uni cast: Eugene […]

‘68 City Cross Country Champ Steve Baum Passes at 66

By: | Tags: | Comments: 2

[Posted February 15, 2018] One of the outstanding athletes in Uni history, Steve Baum, lost his unhappy battle with cancer on February 5, at the age of 66. What made Baum so important was his impact on others. From being a would-be basketball star who figured out quickly that he should choose another sport, Baum made himself into a champion, under the tutelage of Uni coach Dick Kampmann, and a paradigm that Coach K would use for decades to motivate others. Baum explained the transformation at the unveiling of the […]

Uni the backdrop for a 1971 U.S. mental health film!

By: | Tags: , | Comments: 15

[Posted February 7, 2018] Uni has been the scene of much filming since its opening in the 1920s, including many feature films. But it was also used by the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health in 1971 for a troubling, 29-minute film called “Social Seminar: Brian at Seventeen.” According to the description, the film “Presents an adolescent’s view of his educational needs and how school is and is not fulfilling them. Gives a perspective of his educational experience, his parents and life in general.” The film doesn’t have much to […]

David Nwaba ‘11 making the most of his chances in Chicago

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0

[Posted February 1, 2018] Nice story in the Los Angeles Times on David Nwaba ‘11, now playing with the Chicago Bulls of the NBA and doing well. Said Nwaba, “I’m enjoying every second and they’re believing in what I bring to the team and what I can bring defensively. That’s where it all started. The Lakers gave me an opportunity because of what I brought on the defensive end, so it’s good that they can see what I bring on that end and I just look to give my best […]
