Massive YMCA building taking shape
[Posted January 31, 2016] University High School principal Eric Davidson reports that the Collins & Katz Family YMCA now under construction at Westgate and Ohio Avenues is well on its way to completion:
“The YMCA held its topping-out ceremony in November. The roof structure should be complete before El Nino arrives. They are on schedule to be open November of 2016. We are collaborating on a schedule for our instructional and athletics programs.”
If you are in the Uni vicinity and have a chance to see this project, it’s quite impressive. Once completed, it will provide Uni with additional gym, swimming, locker room and meeting facilities, plus underground parking. The YMCA Web site devoted to the project has a terrific, 29-second time-lapse video of the building being constructed.
The Westside Family YMCA that the new facility is replacing opened in 1941 and was the site of Uni’s home swimming meets for many years.
The Collins & Katz Family YMCA will triple the Westside Y space and comprise 72,000 square feet. In addition to offering full-service amenities for YMCA members, the facility will help address the reduction of public school programs by providing extended physical education opportunities for Uni students.
