Advanced Placement courses offer the opportunity for high school students to earn college credits by taking these more rigorous classes and then passing an examination given each spring in each subject. Originated in 1952, the non-profit College Board has run the program since 1955 and the number of students nationwide who took AP exams passed one million in 2006.
