Uni Girls Build LA

By: | Tags: , , , | Comments: 0

Last year, Litzy Bautista was talking to a friend who attends Culver City high school and is part of this great program, Girls Build LA.  Girls Build LA is the local chapter of the organization co-chaired by Michelle Obama that challenges public middle and high school girls to make a difference in their communities and to make sure their voices are heard by their elected leaders.  The organization sponsored an event held at the Galen Center this year to help girls pre-register to vote, and Uni was able to send […]

No one expected that a stunning 566 new books have been sent in by generous alumni and friends. And a new list of books will be posted once school comes back into session in August. Claudia Middleton returns to Uni as its 17th Principal

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0

[Posted June 25, 2018] A familiar face will be in the Principal’s Office at Uni this fall to replace the retiring Eric Davidson. It’s Claudia Middleton, who was a teacher assistant at Uni in 1993 and was most recently the Principal for two years at Whitman Continuation High School on the Fairfax High campus. The selection process was quite lengthy, with the Los Angeles Unified School District setting up a search committee that included four teachers, four parents, a non-teaching staff member and a student. Six candidates were interviewed and […]

Thanks and farewell from retiring Uni Principal Eric Davidson

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0

[Posted June 20, 2018] Uni’s 16th principal, Eric Davidson, retired at the end of the school year, completing a remarkable 10-year run at Uni that began in the Fall of 2008. To say his tenure has been one of achievement would be an understatement. Consider the academic standing at Uni at the end of the 2007-08 school year prior to his arrival and the situation at the end of the 2015-16 school year, the last for which LAUSD School Report Cards are available: Enrollment: => 2007-08: 2,320 => 2015-16: 1,671 […]

By: | Tags: , | Comments: 0

[Posted June 12, 2018] Beginning with the Class of 1926, Uni has seen its graduates move on from the high school ranks with pride in their achievements, both at the school and in the future. So it was on June 7, when the Class of 2018 was recognized at Kampmann Stadium and saluted by Uni principal Eric Davidson: “Class of 2018, Parents, friends, and my esteemed colleagues: “Most of these speeches can go on longer than they should. Especially when there are 380 or so graduates waiting to walk this […]

More honors and first “Thespian Awards” for Uni Theatre program

By: | Tags: , | Comments: 0

[Posted June 2, 2018] It’s the high school awards season, so why not have an awards program for Uni Theatre? Uni’s Director of Theatre Arts, Ronnie Sperling ‘76, made that a reality in 2018, with the first-ever Uni High Thespian Awards. Awarded on May 22, the actors and technical staff voted for male and female awardees in 23 categories, which ranged from the serious to the quite silly, such as “Best Hugger,” Biggest Slob” and “Best Shoulder to Cry on.” In the more traditional categories, the winners included: Best All […]

Could Uni be getting a new name?

By: | Tags: | Comments: 0

[Posted May 20, 2018] Uni’s petition to become an Affiliated Charter School is moving along, and quickly. Principal Eric Davidson recently wrote to the UHEF, noting: “The Charter petition has been submitted to the District’s Charter School Office for review. The plan will be presented to the LAUSD Board of Education on June 5, 2018. We anticipate the plan being approved.” When approved, Uni’s name will change slightly to reflect its Affiliated Charter status; many of you voted on possible name changes earlier this year on the Uni Web site.
